The surgery takes place in several stages, which must all be followed for a successful outcome and as smooth a recovery as possible. It all begins with a pre-operative consultation.
The Pre-operative Consultation
Before the operation, an initial meeting with the surgeon is essential. This consultation serves several purposes, starting with checking that you have none of the contraindications for breast augmentation. These include:
- A history of phlebitis or pulmonary embolism
- Heavy smoking. This can easily be addressed by stopping smoking at least a month before surgery.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Insufficient breast tissue
- Obesity
During the consultation, the surgeon also assesses your physical characteristics, such as your height, weight, muscle tone, fat distribution and chest and breast shape. This is also when you’ll discuss your wishes and the kind of breasts you’d like to achieve.

How the Surgery Is Performed
Breast augmentation is carried out under general anaesthetic. Depending on the case, surgery can take between 50 minutes and an hour and a half. Compression stockings are fitted to reduce the risk of phlebitis. To better control symmetry and breast positioning, the surgeon places patients in a semi-seated position.
The surgery can then be performed using several techniques. Incisions are made to insert the silicone implant into each breast.
The incision is made in the crease under the breast, around the edge of the areola, or in the armpit. The placement plane is another decision: the implant can sit under the pectoral muscle, under the fascia, or between the muscle and the gland[3]. The surgeon will only use the technique you’ve agreed to during your first consultation.
Breast Implants
There are two types of breast implants used in this surgery. The first is filled with silicone gel and is the most commonly used. Silicone implants give a natural look and feel to the breast.
The other type is filled with saline solution, which gives a less natural feel but allows for significant volume increase, with firm, fuller breasts.
Post-operative Care
Once the implants are in place, the incisions are stitched, and a drain may be fitted for the first 24 hours to remove any excess fluid. The surgeon prescribes painkillers for the first few days.
