What is canthoplasty?
This cosmetic surgery in Turkey is recommended for patients whose upper or lower eyelid skin is excessive, slack or lined.
The procedure is also recommended for patients who have swollen fat pads in the lower eyelids that create a tired or aged look, who have puffy lower eyelids, or simply for patients who wish to rejuvenate their appearance.
Not recommended for canthoplasty
Canthoplasty surgery is not recommended for patients with one or more of the following conditions

Overview
Canthoplasty surgery is a type of cosmetic procedure generally performed to smooth out wrinkles under the eye and improve the aesthetic appearance of the eye area. The definitions of these eyelid procedures can sometimes overlap:
epicanthoplasty, or medial canthoplasty, is another surgical procedure that widens the eye horizontally, and is performed at the inner corner of the eye, whereas lateral canthoplasty widens the outer edge of the eye.
Canthoplasty can correct sagging or puffiness of the lower eyelids. Some people may be born with sagging lower eyelids, but the natural ageing process can also cause lower eyelids to sag - skin becomes less elastic after a certain age, and small bags begin to develop beneath the lower eyelids.
Sun exposure can also cause lower eyelids to sag. This gives patients’ faces a tired expression.
The primary aim of canthoplasty is to remove all bags under the eye and take the tiredness out of the patient’s face, while giving them a younger, fresher expression.
Preparation
As well as stopping smoking, oral supplements, herbal teas and blood-thinning medicines such as aspirin should be avoided for at least two weeks before canthoplasty. Alcohol is not permitted for at least 48 hours before and after lower eyelid lift surgery.
How it is performed
Canthoplasty surgery can be carried out under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia. Surgeons discuss these options with the patient and decide on the most appropriate approach according to the patient’s condition.
After the patient is anaesthetised, the surgeon begins to mark the incision points. The incisions are usually made in the corner of the eye so that the scars can be hidden.
A thin plastic shield is used to protect the patient’s eyeball. Canthoplasty surgery varies from one patient to another, but the lateral canthal tendon is usually cut, repositioned and then tightened to achieve a more pleasing appearance. Once the operation is complete, the plastic shield is removed and the incisions are carefully closed.
Dressings are applied to the operated area to prevent infection.
Recovery
Recovery from canthoplasty surgery takes several weeks. If standard sutures are used, they will be removed about a week after the procedure. If dissolvable sutures are used, there is no need to remove them.
About a week after blepharoplasty in Turkey, patients can return to work and to their normal activities. Eye drops can be used to keep the eyes moist. Patients will be given a special type of gel that can be used to keep the eye area clean.
Make-up should be avoided for at least a week after canthoplasty. Patients can also use cold compresses to help reduce swelling during the canthoplasty recovery period.
Risks
In a series of 100 lower eyelid surgeries with canthopexy or canthoplasty, 25 patients reported new-onset dry eye.[1] Complications of canthoplasty surgery may include:
