What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty in Turkey, otherwise known as an eyelid lift, is facial rejuvenation surgery that involves removing excess skin from either the upper or lower eyelids. This procedure is suitable for both men and women. It can be combined with the removal of pockets of fat from both the upper and lower eyelids.
The operation is performed under local anaesthetic on an outpatient basis. The patient returns home in the evening. The operation is not painful. It is possible to operate on all 4 eyelids in a single operation.
Blepharoplasty is suitable for both men and women with bags under the eyes or drooping or heavy eyelids. Essentially, blepharoplasty is for patients who want to get rid of their tired look.

Eyelid surgery
The first signs of ageing are visible in the skin around the eyes, and it’s fair to say that if you’re considering surgery, then it should be done as early as possible – as we age, our skin loses its elasticity, causing it to sag and slacken – particularly where the thin skin of the face is concerned.
In some cases, this sagging skin can cause the upper and lower eyelids to droop, impairing vision and making the person concerned feel uncomfortable and self-conscious.
How does blepharoplasty work in Turkey?
Blepharoplasty is a simple procedure that can be performed under local and general anaesthetic; surgeons make a small incision above the eyelash line to remove excess skin and fat.
These small incisions are stitched back together, removing any trace of the bags that have caused you so much discomfort and lack of confidence. Eyelid surgery in Turkey generally lasts between one and three hours, depending on the degree of ageing.

An operation such as this has minimal recovery time; normally you will be allowed to leave the operation following your procedure, returning only for your check-up and to ensure there have been no complications and a full recovery will normally be possible within a week to ten days.
Ageing around the eyes is a natural process and, due to the continuous loosening of skin elasticity, blepharoplasty in Istanbul is an operation that may need to be performed more than once in a person’s life, to overcome the natural progression of ageing in the eye area.
Eyelid removal surgery for men and women
Eyelid surgery removes the extra fat deposits that create a puffy appearance in the upper eyelid. After the operation, the patient will look and see better, as fatty deposits can impair vision. Bags under the eyes can be repaired by the operation. Lower eyelid surgery can correct a drooping eyelid.
Stages of eyelid surgery
The time taken to perform an operation depends on the technique used by the plastic surgeon and whether patients are undergoing upper or lower eyelid surgery or both. The plastic surgeon makes tiny incisions along the natural lines of the eyelids, along the folds of the patient’s upper eyelids and under the eyelashes of the lower eyelid.
In this way, the patient’s scars will pass through the natural folds of the eyes, helping to conceal them. Excess fat and loose skin are removed, and the cut is closed with stitches. If only fat is removed and there is no excess skin, the cut can be made inside the lower eyelids, leaving no visible scar.
The Turkish plastic surgeon can also use a laser to tighten loose skin and reduce wrinkles. This method does not leave a scar, but the skin may remain red for a few months. In this way, the drooping eyelid is fixed.
Results of eyelid surgery
The stitches are usually removed three to five days after the operation. Patients may need to continue using sterile tape strips to support their eyelids for about a week. Patients will experience some swelling around the eyes after the operation.
Applying a cold compress, such as ice wrapped in a towel, may help reduce the swelling. Patients should not apply ice directly to their skin, as this can damage it. Patients who undergo blepharoplasty in Turkey can watch television and are able to read two or three days after the operation.
They can go to work in the week or ten days following the operation. The scars may still be visible, but they can be covered with make-up.
As part of the recovery process after blepharoplasty, patients should avoid bending at the waist for about five days and strenuous activity (particularly activities that raise blood pressure, such as lifting and strenuous sports) for between ten days and two or three weeks. The operation will leave scars, but these are generally well hidden and normally fade over time.
Blepharoplasty can leave the patient with bruising or swelling on the face, and sometimes the patient can become depressed as a result. These are some of the side effects of surgery, which are completely normal and disappear within a few weeks when healing is complete.
Limitations of eyelid surgery
Upper eyelid surgery can be used to treat drooping upper eyelids, which make the patient look tired or can even restrict vision. Lower eye bag removal surgery can correct puffy bags under the eyes. Blepharoplasty eliminates dark circles under the eyes.
Blepharoplasty can also be performed on HIV-infected patients. Blepharoplasty for HIV-positive patients is carried out by experienced doctors in a specially dedicated, sterile operating theatre. However, the cost of the operation remains higher because the staff are over-equipped during the operation.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions
How long does a blepharoplasty last?
The results of a blepharoplasty last on average between 10 and 15 years. Of course, your face will continue to change over time (due to ageing). After about ten years, it is therefore possible to carry out a few touch-ups if you feel the need.
Does eyelid surgery in Turkey hurt?
Blepharoplasty is generally carried out under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. For a few days after the operation, it is quite common to experience a little discomfort due to swelling of the eyelids. You will then take an anti-inflammatory medication.
What is the minimum age for correction of drooping eyelids in Istanbul?
Drooping eyelids are a problem that generally affects people aged 30 and over: blepharoplasty in Istanbul is therefore mainly aimed at them. However, blepharoplasty can also be performed in childhood, particularly if it affects vision.
Does under-eye puffiness surgery leave scars?
For a lower blepharoplasty, the incisions are generally made in the conjunctival mucosa, leaving no visible scar. In the case of excess skin, however, scars are inevitable, although they tend to be discreet.
What is the minimum length of stay in Turkey for a blepharoplasty?
The minimum length of stay for a blepharoplasty operation in Turkey is 6 days: one night in hospital and 5 days in a hotel. This allows the surgeon to act quickly in the event of complications, and to check that recovery is going as smoothly as possible.
