What is hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty in Turkey is surgery that restores a torn hymen. The hymen carries strong symbolic weight in many cultures; anatomically it is a thin membrane at the entrance to the vagina. The state of the hymen cannot establish whether a woman has had sexual intercourse[1]. It can tear for non-sexual reasons such as running or jumping, and some women are born without one.

Hymenoplasty can be carried out in several ways:
- If remnants of the hymen are present, they can be stitched back together.
- The second option is to rebuild a new hymen using tissue from the patient’s own body. As well as restoring the hymen, the vaginal walls can also be tightened. This procedure repairs the hymen; bleeding and discomfort are possible during the next intercourse, but cannot be guaranteed[2].
Demand is most often linked to the social importance placed on virginity before marriage: in a Turkish series of 4,259 records, 58.6% of patients were engaged[3].
How does hymenoplasty in Turkey work?
First you will need to arrange a consultation with the gynaecologist to discuss the operation and set out your expectations clearly. The doctor will talk you through the procedure and give you instructions to prepare for your hymenoplasty in Turkey.
The basic technique - If remnants of the hymen remain, it can be stitched. Local or sometimes general anaesthesia is given to prevent pain and discomfort. The surgeon then sews the torn edges together - the stitches are dissolvable. The procedure takes around 30 to 45 minutes and is usually done as day surgery.
The allograft technique - This technique is used when the remnants cannot be stitched. The surgeon places a biomaterial inside the vagina and this material acts as a hymen. The length and type of anaesthesia are confirmed during your consultation.
Hymen reconstruction - In this procedure the surgeon creates a new hymen using tissue from the vaginal lip. This method, however, requires a prolonged period of sexual abstinence, the length of which is set by the surgeon.
What is the difference between temporary and permanent hymenoplasty?
The table sets out two techniques that the literature compares. In a Turkish study of 246 patients, the temporary technique more often produced the expected bleeding at first intercourse[2]. In a series of 4,259 records, 83.3% of patients had chosen the permanent technique[3].
Who is hymenoplasty in Turkey for?
Women usually request a hymenoplasty for cultural and religious reasons. In most cases the person lost her virginity during sexual intercourse and wants to restore it before marriage. In some cases a young woman lost her hymen through non-sexual activities, but again, because of religious or social norms, she feels it is essential to repair it.
Ideal candidates
- Those who have had a torn hymen because of sexual intercourse or other activities.
- Those aged over 18.
- Women in good health who do not have serious illnesses.
A gynaecological examination is also needed to determine whether your hymen can be restored or not.
Who is not eligible?
If the woman has cancer of the genital organs or a sexually transmitted infection, she is not eligible for treatment; the gynaecological examination may reveal other contraindications.
Are there any side effects?
Potential side effects of hymenoplasty in Turkey include:
- Swelling and pain
- Post-operative bruising
- Haematomas and bleeding
- Discolouration of the hymen
- Numbness
These are usually minor side effects[3], but more serious complications remain possible and warrant prompt medical advice.
Post-operative follow-up
The patient is monitored for a few hours in the recovery room after treatment and, if no complication is found, she is discharged. You can return to work after 3 to 4 days. However, moderate activity is best started only after 10 days.
You will need to keep the area clean and take antibiotics to prevent infection. You will need to use warm compresses and ice packs to ease pain and swelling. You can take a bath 2 to 3 days after the operation. How long to wait before resuming sexual intercourse depends on the technique used and is agreed with the surgeon.
Full healing takes around 4 to 6 weeks.

Can a hymenoplasty fail?
No study publishes a failure rate. One case published in 2023 describes a suture that was too tight, with pain and penetration impossible, revised under general anaesthesia with a favourable outcome[4]. This isolated case gives no frequency.
Can a hymenoplasty be detected?
