What is a dental bridge?

There are many reasons why we lose teeth. It can be due to ageing, an accident or illness. Whatever the reason, these factors will have a negative impact on your daily life. You can no longer enjoy your favourite foods, you lose your confidence, your joy and your natural smile. All of these problems can be improved with a dental bridge in Hungary.

What does poor dentition cause?

  • Missing teeth cause problems with chewing
  • It is harder to smile
  • Chewing food will not be efficient, which can lead to digestive issues.
  • Under the gums where teeth are missing, the jawbone will begin to deteriorate and become significantly weakened.

How To Replace Missing Teeth?

The choice between a bridge on natural teeth and an implant-supported bridge is made after an examination and panoramic X-ray. It depends on the condition of the adjacent teeth and the available bone volume.

Dental Bridges on Your Natural Teeth

A dental bridge in Hungary can be applied if you have a gap between your teeth, but the adjacent teeth are healthy. In this case, the teeth next to the gap are filed down and serve as abutments for the bridge.

This is a 3-unit dental bridge in Hungary, consisting of 3 crowns and filling a gap between teeth. Dental bridges can be applied to larger gaps when two or even three teeth are missing.

In that case, the bridge may have 4 or 5 units, but the number of abutments is always two. They are at either end of the gap and the bridge is fixed to them. It is also possible to have bridges with 6 or more units, but then there must be an abutment tooth in the middle of the gap.

If you have lost several teeth in a row, our dentists recommend a zirconia bridge or a porcelain bridge in the front area. These metal-free bridges are individually fabricated, and their colour matches your natural teeth. The difference between your natural teeth and the dental bridge in Hungary is virtually non-existent, imperceptible.

If you have missing teeth in the molar region, you will likely be recommended a porcelain bridge fused to metal crowns. It is preferable for molars because it is more flexible than zirconia and better withstands the force of chewing.

It is also an aesthetic solution, though not as perfect as zirconia or porcelain, and it works excellently in the molar area. If you want a Hollywood smile, you can have zirconia bridges in the molar region as well, but this requires a thorough dental examination.

Bridges also need proper oral care, good oral hygiene, regular cleaning, and regular dental check-ups for 12 months, just like your natural teeth.

Conditions Where Implantation Is Not Possible:

  • If you are a heavy smoker.
  • If you are under 14 years old.
  • If you have cancer.
  • Alcoholism.
  • Severe diabetes.
  • Insufficient bone.

Advantages of Bridges on Natural Teeth:

  • A quick and easy solution in a few days
  • Optimises the shape and colour of missing teeth

If you opt for a bridge on natural teeth, it can be completed in a single visit of 3 to 5 days to Budapest. Once the abutment teeth are prepared, you will receive temporary crowns to protect the teeth until you get your permanent bridge.

Implant-Supported Bridges

This is necessary when no adjacent tooth can serve as an abutment. It can be used where there are no healthy teeth that could support a bridge. The implant itself provides a stable abutment on both sides of the bridge. It is more stable, more durable, and less problematic than bridges attached to natural teeth.

Advantages of Implant-Supported Bridges in Budapest:

  • No need to shave down healthy, intact teeth for abutments. Healthy teeth remain intact for a long time.
  • Available meta-analyses follow these prostheses for 5 to 10 years, not beyond.
  • It provides the same load to the bone as a natural tooth so the jawbone does not weaken.
  • Provides maximum stability to the bridge.
  • The screw osseointegrates with the jawbone.
  • Chewing becomes possible again over the entire reconstructed area.

An implant-supported bridge avoids shaving healthy teeth; this is its main advantage when several teeth are missing.

If you choose an implant-supported bridge, you will need two visits to Budapest. During the first visit of 2 to 3 days, the dental screws (abutments) are placed, and after a healing period of 3 to 6 months, you can return for the permanent bridge.

To fabricate the permanent bridge, allow 4 to 5 working days. During the healing period, you can have a temporary partial denture to restore chewing function and aesthetics.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bridge placed in Hungary reimbursed in the UK?

Hungary is in the European Union. As the UK is no longer an EU member, the rules of cross-border healthcare do not apply. You will need to check with your insurer or the NHS about any possible coverage before considering treatment abroad.

On implant-supported bridges, a meta-analysis of 19 studies reports a 5-year survival rate of 98.7% for porcelain-fused-to-metal versus 93.0% for layered zirconia[1]. The more expensive option is not always the most durable. The authors consider PFM the standard of reference on implants.

Ask whether the zirconia is layered or monolithic. Based on 32 studies in the posterior area, all four materials perform similarly at 3 years, but layered restorations fracture significantly more than monolithic ones[2]. This distinction is not mentioned on any quote.

From 2,300 bonded bridges, the survival rate is 91.4% at 5 years and 82.9% at 10 years. The most common complication is debonding, at 15% after 5 years[3]. Bridges with a single retainer hold better than others.

There is no evidence to support that claim. Published meta-analyses only follow bridges for 5 and 10 years[1][3]; there is no data beyond that. A loose crown can be replaced, but the abutment cannot. A bridge should be monitored like a natural tooth.

Expect to pay £1,200 to £2,500 in the UK, compared to £600 to £1,450 in Hungary. The difference is due to laboratory and professional fees, not the material, which often comes from the same suppliers. A bridge in Turkey can be even cheaper, but it is outside the EU.

Insufficient bone is the most common contraindication to implant-supported bridges. A bone graft may then be considered, or a bridge on natural teeth if the adjacent teeth are healthy. Bone grafting adds several months to the timeline.
