What is an FUE hair transplant?
FUE is a hair restoration procedure that takes between 3 and 8 hours and involves taking individual hair follicles from the donor site (usually the back or sides of the scalp) and transplanting them into areas of thinning hair. Patients experience minimal discomfort, mainly due to the administration of a local anaesthetic at the start of the procedure.
The follicles are extracted without incision, which means there is no visible scar. The follicles, which are living tissue, are then carefully grafted onto the areas where hair loss has occurred. The grafted hair remains in place for several weeks before falling out. Over the next 4 to 6 months, new hair growth begins, and you will see the appearance of strong, healthy, natural hair. As the rate of hair growth varies from person to person, full results can take up to a year.
Large areas of follicles can be transplanted in a single session, meaning you’ll need fewer procedures to get the coverage you want. More recently, surgeons are using NeoGraft 2.0 technology, which involves pneumatic pressure to extract individual follicles. This protects the delicate grafts and gives a better overall result.
The difference between FUE and FUT
FUE is not the only method of hair restoration available, but it is the most ideal for many patients. Another well-known procedure, called FUT (or Follicular Unit Transplantation), involves removing a small strip of hair-bearing skin. This area must then be closed with stitches or staples, resulting in a linear scar that is visible when the hair is cut short.
The right candidate for FUE
The best candidates for an FUE hair transplant in Tunisia are those who suffer from hair loss on the top of the head or near the front of the hairline or in the crown and who have good thick hair at the back of the head. More donor hair at the back helps restore greater hair density. The NeoGraft 2.0 FUE system can also be used for hair restoration on the eyebrows or body, or even to camouflage unsightly scars from previous hair restoration attempts.

Recovery: Post-operative follow-up
You can expect a short recovery time. Most patients need only a day’s rest before resuming their daily activities. Both the donor and implant sites will be sore for several days, but this discomfort is mild. The longest part of the recovery period is the time it takes for the donor site area to regrow the hair that has been removed, as this area is cut very short before the hair follicles are removed.
Results and follow-up
FUE is generally a permanent solution to hair loss. To maintain optimum results, a healthy, balanced diet, exercise and avoidance of smoking are recommended. A preventive medical regime may be necessary if your hair loss is deemed to be progressive. All of this will be discussed with you during your consultation and a personalised treatment plan will be proposed.
