What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is a cosmetic surgery technique that involves removing existing hair from an area of the head, often the nape of the neck or the sides, and then grafting it onto a balding area. The depopulated areas are generally the temporal gulfs, the vertex and the front line of the skull.
There are currently 3 types of operation:
The FUT method
This involves removing a strip of skin approximately 1 cm wide and 12 to 23 cm long. The bulbs are then harvested from this strip and implanted in the recipient area. This procedure can produce up to 1,500 grafts and an average of 1,300 grafts, or 3,000 hairs.
- Advantages: Cheaper, quicker
- Disadvantages: More restrictive, longer recovery time, leaves visible scars
The FUE method
This is the most sophisticated technique, as it leaves no visible scars after the operation. The surgeon first shaves the patient’s head before extracting the follicular units one by one, bearing in mind that each unit can generate between one and six hairs. After extraction, the surgeon makes incisions in the reception area, i.e. the bald area that the patient wishes to cover.
- Advantages: Very discreet, the hair then grows back naturally
- Disadvantages: Leaves micro-scars
The FUE-DHI method:
This procedure makes it possible to carry out a hair transplant by shaving only a very small part of the patient’s head. The grafts are extracted from a defined donor area and leave no scars.
This method is ideal for patients who do not need a large number of follicular units. For others, it is still preferable to use standard FUE.
- Advantages: Non-invasive, more discreet, 100% natural result
- Disadvantages: More expensive
Who is hair transplantation in Spain suitable for?
There are many reasons for hair loss. Sometimes it is temporary, but in some cases it can be permanent.
- Alopecia areata linked to an auto-immune disease that attacks the hair follicles;
- Hair loss linked to androgenetic baldness in men;
- Hormonal imbalance, most often in women;
- Burns, etc.
Any patient can have a hair transplant in Spain as long as they are over 18, in good health and have enough hair for the procedure.
It should be noted, however, that the ideal age is between 30 and 40, since before that, the hormonal system remains unstable and an imbalance could necessitate a new operation.

Why choose Spain for a hair transplant?
Hair transplants began to become popular in Spain in the 1990s and have continued to attract patients from all over Europe ever since. There are several reasons for this attraction:
Proximity and within the EU
Many Europeans make the trip every year, because the prices are often lower and crossing the border is very simple. Not least because Spain is part of the European Union.
Health care safety
Health care in Spain is among the best in the world, and hygiene protocols are very strict and rigorous.
State-of-the-art medical facilities
Health facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and ultra-modern operating theatres.
Skilled surgeons and medical staff
Spain has a large number of skilled, experienced and trained plastic surgeons. In other words, the patient is in good hands.
Before the operation
As with any cosmetic surgery operation, a protocol must be followed.
– Precautions to be taken
As with all cosmetic surgery, patients are asked to stop taking anticoagulants and anti-inflammatories a few days before the big day. Medical tests are sometimes requested to ensure that the patient is in good health.
– First consultation
During the first medical consultation, the surgeon and patient will discuss, among other things:
- The patient’s needs and expectations
- Recommendations
- Potential complications;
- Possible solutions.
During the operation
The operation is performed under local anaesthetic and lasts between 3 and 5 hours, depending on the technique used and the size of the graft. FUE generally lasts longer than FUSS.
How the operation is performed
– FUE technique
This technique does not require a visit to the operating theatre. During the operation, the surgeon first shaves the nape of the neck and then removes the bulbs using a scalpel. The bulbs are then transplanted as tightly as possible to achieve maximum density. The operation generally takes 5 hours, sometimes longer depending on the number of hairs transplanted.
– FUT technique
A strip of skin is taken from the back of the scalp, in the occipital area, along the entire length between the two ears. The skin flap is then cut to isolate the grafts, which are made up of an average of 3 to 4 hairs. Finally, the grafts are implanted in the bald areas and the scalp is then sutured with staples.
Risks and complications
Although the risks are minimal, they do exist. After a hair transplant operation, certain complications may arise:
- An allergic reaction to the anaesthetic;
- Significant blood loss;
- A graft that does not take;
- Infection;
- Loss of sensation in the scalp, etc.
After the operation
Following the operation, the patient should follow certain recommendations:
Precautions to be taken
- Bandages are normally removed the following day;
- You can shampoo your hair two days after the operation;
- The patient may return to work between 3 and 5 days after the operation;
- The stitches are removed after 10 days;
- The patient can resume sporting activities after 3 weeks.
A hair transplant in Spain does not require hospitalisation and the patient can return home during the day.
Post-operative pain and scarring
Pain following a hair transplant is very often moderate, but the nursing staff systematically prescribe painkillers to ensure that the patient suffers as little as possible.
While the scars are invisible during FUE, the strip technique leaves a scar at the back of the skull, at the level of the incision, and the hair does not grow back.
Results of a hair transplant in Spain
The final result can sometimes take up to 18 months. The implanted hair may fall out during the healing process; this is normal. They should then grow back normally until a permanent result is obtained.
This is because the hair contained in the grafts falls naturally to make way for new hair. The density of the new hair begins to be visible after about 6 months. However, it is necessary to wait between 8 and 12 months to see the desired result, and then around 18 months for the final result.
After a hair transplant in Spain, the patient :
- Regains a healthy, dense scalp, just as before;
- No more hair loss;
- Regain their self-confidence.
How much does a hair transplant in Spain cost?
The cost of a hair transplant in Spain depends on several factors:
- The clinic or establishment chosen;
- The type of operation;
- The technology used in the operating theatre;
- The surgeon’s expertise.
Although there are treatments to combat hair loss, hair transplants are the only solution that will provide a permanent result. That’s why thousands of patients decide to take the plunge every year, and why they no longer hesitate to travel to Spain for a hair transplant.
