What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a cosmetic surgery technique that involves removing existing hair from an area of the head, often the nape of the neck or the sides, and then grafting it onto a balding area. The depopulated areas are generally the temporal gulfs, the vertex and the front line of the skull.

There are currently 3 types of operation:

The FUT method

This involves removing a strip of skin approximately 1 cm wide and 12 to 23 cm long. The bulbs are then harvested from this strip and implanted in the recipient area. This procedure can produce up to 1,500 grafts and an average of 1,300 grafts, or 3,000 hairs.

The FUE method

This is the most sophisticated technique, as it leaves no visible scars after the operation. After extraction, the surgeon makes incisions in the reception area, i.e. the bald area that the patient wishes to cover.

• Disadvantages: Leaves micro-scars

The FUE-DHI method:

This procedure makes it possible to carry out a hair transplant by shaving only a very small part of the patient’s head. The grafts are extracted from a defined donor area and leave no scars.

This method is ideal for patients who do not need a large number of follicular units. For others, it is still preferable to use standard FUE.

• Advantages: Non-invasive, more discreet, 100% natural result
• Disadvantages: More expensive

How the operation is performed

– FUE technique

This technique does not require a visit to the operating theatre. During the operation, the surgeon first shaves the nape of the neck and then removes the bulbs using a scalpel. The bulbs are then transplanted as tightly as possible to achieve maximum density. The operation generally takes 5 hours, sometimes longer depending on the number of hairs transplanted.

– FUT technique

A strip of skin is taken from the back of the scalp, in the occipital area, along the entire length between the two ears. The skin flap is then cut to isolate the grafts, which are made up of an average of 3 to 4 hairs. Finally, the grafts are implanted in the bald areas and the scalp is then sutured with staples.

Risks and complications

Although the risks are minimal, they do exist. After a hair transplant operation, certain complications may arise:

After the operation

Following the operation, the patient should follow certain recommendations:

While the scars are invisible during FUE, the strip technique leaves a scar at the back of the skull, at the level of the incision, and the hair does not grow back.

The final result can sometimes take up to 18 months. The implanted hair may fall out during the healing process; this is normal. They should then grow back normally until a permanent result is obtained.
