What is jaw surgery?

The jaw plays a major role in the overall harmony of the face. The jawline contributes to facial balance just as much as the nose and chin do. The jaw can become disproportionate to the rest of the face for the following reasons:

  • Facial trauma
  • Genetics
  • Congenital conditions
  • Ageing

This cosmetic surgery is performed in Turkey to correct a weak jaw or to reduce the size of a wide jaw. Different methods are used to achieve the desired result. These methods are as follows:

  • Hyaluronic acid is injected into the jaw for a better appearance
  • Fat injections - fat is taken from the abdominal area and injected into the jaw
  • Silicone implants - the implants are placed in the jaw under local or general anaesthesia
  • Reshaping of the jawbone
  • Placement of bone cartilage

Jaw reshaping

Jaw surgery is a procedure carried out in Turkey to reduce long or wide jaws. The operation, performed in Istanbul, is done under general anaesthesia. Incisions are made inside the mouth to reshape and narrow the jaw.

The jaw is rarely assessed on its own: the profile also depends on the chin and neck, which are covered in our Face Lift Prices page for Istanbul.

You will need to be careful with eating and drinking for a while. The final result can only be judged some time after the operation, once the swelling has settled.

Jaw aesthetics

Different techniques can be used in jaw aesthetics. The back of the chin can be filled out with silicone and dermal fillers. If the chin is short, it can be brought forward using screws.

In short, since the surgery is performed as a standard operation, the type of surgery needs to be determined according to the patient’s own concerns.

Jaw surgery

Jaw surgery in Turkey, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a procedure used to correct jaw deformities.

The teeth and other structures of the jaw are aligned for a more functional and more aesthetically pleasing result. Before jaw surgery, an X-ray is needed to help draw up a surgical plan based on the desired outcome.

Orthognathic or maxillofacial surgery: what does the price cover?

Maxillofacial surgery is the specialty; orthognathic surgery is the part of it that repositions the jaws. The price shown on this page relates to that procedure, and it varies depending on whether one jaw, both jaws, or the chin as well is being treated. The table above sets out each case.

This choice does not only affect the cost. A national register of 428 patients shows that double jaw or lower jaw surgery more than triples the risk of infection and lasting sensory disturbance compared with upper jaw surgery alone[1].

Before the operation

A full assessment is needed to check your eligibility for jaw surgery. Once you are eligible, a date for the operation is set.

You must stop smoking cigarettes two weeks before your scheduled operation date. Blood-thinning medications should not be taken before the operation.

These points matter a great deal, because the success of your operation affects the healing process. The duration depends on how many jaws are operated on, and stays within the 2 to 4 hour range given above.

After the operation

Once the genioplasty is complete, a hospital stay is required. Your surgeon will then prescribe painkillers and any other medication you need. You will have to wear a dressing for a while. There will be some mild bruising and swelling. These gradually settle over the following weeks.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How much does jaw surgery cost in Turkey?

In Turkey, the price ranges from £2,400 to £6,000 depending on the procedure, compared with £8,000 to £30,000 privately in the UK. The fee covers general anaesthesia, the operation and two nights in hospital. The same operation can be compared with Tunisia.

Any osteotomy carries a risk of altered sensation in the lower lip, which is usually temporary. Among 891 patients who had surgery, recurrence affected 6.4% of cases and infection 4.9%, with no fatal complications[2].

Under general anaesthesia, the procedure itself is not felt. In the days that follow, swelling and jaw stiffness are far more of a burden than pain, which is controlled by the prescribed painkillers.

Their presence during sagittal split osteotomy does not increase the risk of unfavourable fracture, infection or sensory disturbance, according to a meta-analysis of 19 studies. It does, however, lengthen the operating time[3].

When only the chin is affected, genioplasty is enough and the price falls between £1,500 and £2,700 in Turkey. The recovery is milder: 3.4% infection, 8.5% haematoma and 6.8% temporary numbness[4].

Osteotomy is performed once facial growth is complete, otherwise the result shifts with it. It is the clinical examination and the X-ray, not your age as such, that allow the surgeon to decide when to operate.

Your stay covers the operation, two nights in hospital and the follow-up consultation before you fly home. Istanbul clinics arrange transfers and accommodation, as set out in our guide to medical tourism in Turkey.
