Want to find out more? Then follow the guide: we’ll tell you everything you need to know about carrying out this operation in Spain.

Mommy makeover: what is it?

Also known as “body contouring”, mommy makeover is a post-pregnancy surgery widely practised in the United States, which has since spread throughout the world.

The principle of this operation is to repair the physical after-effects of pregnancy through a combination of different surgical procedures.

In general, plastic surgeons limit themselves to 2 or 3 operations per procedure: this reduces the risks and shortens the recovery time.

The three most commonly performed mommy makeover surgeries are as follows:

  • Abdominoplasty: this operation is similar to a tummy tuck. It tightens the skin of the abdomen, which tends to sag after pregnancy.
  • Breast lift: sometimes accompanied by a breast augmentation or reduction, this operation is designed to lift the breasts, which can sag with breastfeeding.
  • Liposuction: also known as liposuction, this procedure removes excess fat locally, often from the hips and buttocks.

Who can benefit from a mommy makeover?

While Mommy Makeover can be useful for all mothers, young or old, it is primarily aimed at women who no longer wish to have children.

It is advisable towait at least 6 months after the end of your pregnancy before considering this procedure. This will give your body time to recover naturally from childbirth, and you may find that some operations are not necessary after all.

Finally, there are a few contraindications to Mommy Makeover. In particular, it is not recommended for women who are :

  • overweight women, as obesity increases the risk of phlebitis and infections during abdominoplasty;
  • smokers: smoking must be stopped at least one month before the operation;
  • have a medical condition that is incompatible with the operation (diabetes, heart failure, respiratory problems, etc.);
  • suffer from dysmorphophobia (obsessive thoughts about a slight defect in their physical appearance).

Mommy makeover: what are the risks?

Abdominoplasty, for example, carries a risk of phlebitis: an illness caused by the formation of a blood clot. The pre-operative examination is therefore particularly important, as it is at this time that the doctor will determine whether or not the operation is suitable for you.

As a general rule, it is also advisable not to exceed 5 or 6 hours of surgery: this will limit potential complications and promote better postoperative recovery.

The mommy makeover in detail

Before the operation

Have you decided to travel to Spain to have a mommy makeover? The first step is to make an appointment with a plastic surgeon to define the broad outlines of the operation.

Depending on your state of health and the operations planned, you will then have to wait between 6 and 12 months (from the date of delivery) to have your mommy makeover. This will be an opportunity for you to recover physically and emotionally from your pregnancy, and then to gradually resume sporting activity to encourage weight loss.

During the operation

As this is a relatively long and complex operation, the mommy makeover is always performed under general anaesthetic.

The operations chosen in consultation with the patient are then carried out one after the other, during an operation that generally lasts between 2 hours and 4 and a half hours.

Although each woman is unique, and therefore each operation is 100% personalised, most patients stay in the clinic for 1 or 2 days: this is an opportunity to check that everything is in order and to give them the main post-operative recommendations.

After the operation

Depending on the operation performed, the post-operative convalescence period can last from 2 to 3 weeks: you will need to rest completely to allow your body to recover in the best possible conditions.

In general, patients who travel to Spain stay for a week after the operation, so that the surgeon can monitor the first few days. You can then return home to recover slowly from your operation.

In most cases, it takes around :

  • 24 hours to start walking slowly again ;
  • 1 week to be able to walk on a daily basis;
  • 2 weeks to be able to drive again;
  • 4 to 6 weeks to be able to carry heavy loads;
  • 2 months to get back into sport.

You will then benefit permanently from the advantages of the various operations, provided that you do not become pregnant again afterwards.

How much does a Mommy Makeover cost in Spain?

In Spain, you will need to spend between €9,000 and €11,500, depending on the number of operations carried out and the total duration of the procedure. Although the price range is broadly the same, you will be treated by perfectly qualified professionals in clinics with modern, state-of-the-art facilities.

The mild climate of the Iberian Peninsula also means that you can combine a holiday with good health: enough to recharge your batteries and regain your self-confidence so that you can take full responsibility for your pregnancy.
