What is thigh liposuction?
Liposuction, or thigh lipoaspiration, is a fairly common cosmetic procedure in Tunisia. As the name suggests, it removes fat that has accumulated on the thighs.
Depending on your needs and preferences, the procedure can target different areas:
- On the inner thighs: the skin very often forms waves here. Once excess fat has been removed, a lift may be carried out to tighten the skin.
- On the outer thighs, also known as saddlebags: a very common request from women, and an effective way to slim the silhouette.
- On the back and front of the thighs: these areas are treated sparingly, because the skin there is thin and not very elastic.
When all of these areas are treated in a single operation, it is called circumferential thigh liposuction. This is performed under general anaesthesia, whereas local anaesthesia is usually enough for a single area.
To keep the silhouette in proportion, your surgeon may also perform liposuction of the hips, buttocks or knees. They will discuss this with you during the preoperative consultation.
Thigh liposuction: who is it for and why?
Because of hormonal fluctuations and the way fat cells are distributed around the buttocks and hips, women are more likely to consider thigh liposuction.
Even so, more and more men are now opting for this procedure, keen to regain a more balanced silhouette.
The procedure is often easier in younger patients, because the tissues are firmer and results more predictable. Older patients can still benefit, although the outcome then depends more on how elastic their skin is.
Two main reasons may lead you to consider thigh liposuction: your thighs rub together, causing discomfort and irritation, or you simply want to slim your lower body. In the second case, bear in mind that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, but a way of reshaping the silhouette.
Finally, thigh lipoaspiration is contraindicated in the following cases:
- during pregnancy: it is advisable to postpone the operation until after the birth and, where relevant, after breastfeeding;
- in patients with certain conditions such as leukaemia or uncontrolled diabetes;
- in people with a history of phlebitis or pulmonary embolism.
Other risk factors exist, such as smoking, taking oral contraceptives or being overweight. All of these will be considered by your surgeon at the preoperative consultation.
The stages of the procedure
Many patients travel to Tunisia for the favourable prices, but the way a thigh liposuction is carried out is exactly the same as in the UK.
The preoperative consultation
As with any operation, you will have a first consultation with your surgeon to review your expectations and your general health.
Your doctor will then carry out a detailed examination of your body shape, assessing in particular the elasticity of your skin and the extent of the fat to be removed.
Between one month and 48 hours before the procedure, you will also meet the anaesthetist to decide which type of anaesthesia best suits your situation.
If liposuction is performed on several areas at once, general anaesthesia will always be recommended, after checking that you have no contraindication to this type of procedure.
How the operation is carried out
Thigh liposuction is a relatively short operation, lasting between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes depending on how many areas are treated.
It is usually done as day-case surgery: the operation is scheduled for the morning and you can go home in the late afternoon. Depending on how much fat is aspirated, however, you may need to stay one night at the clinic so any complications can be monitored.
On the day of the operation, the surgeon will first mark out the areas to be aspirated with a special pen. You will then be placed under anaesthesia, and tiny incisions of 3 or 4 millimetres will be made. These are usually placed in the natural folds of the skin so that they stay as discreet as possible.
At this stage of the procedure, a saline solution, usually combined with a local anaesthetic and adrenaline, is injected under the skin. This limits bleeding and helps the fat to be extracted.
The fat cells are then aspirated using cannulas: microtubes a few millimetres in diameter, specially designed to protect the skin and tissues. Inserted through the incisions made at the start of the procedure, the tubes gradually draw out fat at both surface and deeper levels, so as to limit the risk of irregularities.
Once the operation is over, the elastic nature of the skin allows it to tighten naturally. In some cases, however, a lift may be needed to firm and tone the thighs.
Finally, the surgeon will fit a compression garment. After liposuction, the treated tissues react with oedema, which causes swelling. The garment helps to limit this while protecting the operated area.
Recovery
After the operation you will feel moderate pain, which can easily be relieved with the painkillers prescribed by your doctor. The next day you can shower after removing the compression garment. As a rule it must be worn for 4 to 6 weeks, while the swelling gradually subsides over several weeks.
In the first few weeks after the operation, massage of the thighs is often recommended. This mechanical action has several benefits. In particular, it helps to:
- improve oxygenation of the skin tissues;
- improve lymphatic circulation;
- reduce swelling;
- ease the pain.
Depending on your preferences and your budget, you can massage yourself daily or call on a physiotherapist or masseur.
Although the first results of liposuction are visible at the end of the procedure, it usually takes several months for the body to recover fully. By carefully following your surgeon’s advice, you can expect to see the final results after around 3 or 4 months.
