Post-operative recovery
Incision sites
You may notice fluid leaking from the incisions during the 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. This is tumescent fluid, a product of the local anaesthetic. It may be tinged with blood, which is entirely normal, so there is no need to worry. Any heavy leakage, however, should be reported to the clinic.
Within 7 days of the operation, the wound will be checked to assess your stitches, which should gradually dissolve. Avoid getting the incision area wet, as a warm, damp environment encourages bacteria to grow and can lead to wound infection.
Compression garment
You will leave the clinic wearing your made-to-measure compression garment. You will need to wear it continuously until your surgeon allows you to take it off. Be aware that if you stop wearing it before you have been told to, you will not achieve the best results.
Bruising / Swelling
You should expect bruising, swelling and discomfort after the procedure, and some swelling can persist for several months. You may also feel as though you have lost sensation in the treated areas, which is common and usually temporary. As your nerves begin to regenerate, sensation should return to normal.
Discomfort
Immediately after the operation you will feel mild discomfort, easily managed with your medication. This discomfort lasts only a short time and most patients can get up and move around comfortably after a day or two. Be aware, though, that you may need some assistance in the 24 to 48 hours after the operation.
Painkillers will be prescribed to ease any discomfort, but if you experience intense pain, contact your surgeon immediately. We strongly advise you not to take any medication containing aspirin for a week after the operation.
Short-term precautions
Physical activity
Vaser liposuction requires minimal downtime, which means you can return to light daily activity two days after the procedure, depending on the area treated. We do advise taking at least a week off to allow yourself to recover fully.
Over the following two or three weeks, the treated areas may remain very sensitive and intense physical activity should be limited. During this period you can gradually return to activities such as lifting light weights and having sex. Your surgeon will give you clear advice on the activities you can take on, depending on the area treated.
Compression garment
Immediately after the operation you will be given a made-to-measure compression garment. This is an important step in the healing process. You need to wear it for four to six weeks, as advised by your doctor, to support healing, reduce swelling and ensure the treated areas are well contoured.
Long-term precautions
For the best results, we advise including a personalised course of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) in your long-term post-operative care. We work closely with an MLD specialist if you would like to include this type of massage in your recovery.
Manual lymphatic drainage massage
For the best results, we recommend investing in a course of manual lymphatic drainage, which speeds up recovery, clears any swelling or fluid build-up in the body and helps remove residual toxins.
This massage technique can be used after Vaser liposuction, from 48 hours after the procedure, to speed up healing. It combines ultrasound treatment with manual massage.
By working on the lymph at the dermo-epidermal junction, near the surface of the skin, this technique supports the body’s processes and clears excess fluid from deep layers, shallow layers and dead spaces.
It supports better skin retraction, reduces muscle stiffness and improves your immediate mobility after the operation. It also has a therapeutic and anti-inflammatory effect on the tissues.
Physical activity
