Sex selection methods

There are two distinct methods of sex selection at fertility clinics in Cyprus:

MicroSort Sperm Sorting

MicroSort is a patented technology that allows sperm to be sorted.

The X chromosome is responsible for procreation of the female gender and the Y chromosome for procreation of the male gender.

MicroSort is a mechanical procedure that separates the sperm into two distinct compartments: those carrying X and those carrying Y. Once the MicroSort procedure has been completed, the high-qualitysperm sample is used in the IVF cycle to produce embryos of the desired sex.

This method has an accuracy of around 75% for male sex selection and around 90% for female sex selection.

One of the advantages of MicroSort technology is that it allows us to offer sex selection with non-invasive IUI cycles. IUI cycles require much gentler medication regimes and do not require any surgical procedures. The ability to choose your baby’s sex without any invasive procedures is a good option for most couples.

However, it should be borne in mind that MicroSort IUI is best suited to younger couples in their twenties and that the overall success rate of pregnancies with IUI cycles will be around 25%. It is an inexpensive and non-invasive option, but its success rates will not be as high as IVF treatment options.

MicroSort with IUI

This is the least invasive sex selection option for young, fertile couples who wish to specify the sex of their next child for family balance purposes. MicroSort sperm sorting technology is combined withintrauterine insemination (IUI ) to help couples conceive a child of the desired gender.

The price of MicroSort with IUI in Cyprus is €3,000.

MicroSort with IVF

With this treatment option, the sperm sorting process is always the same. The sperm sample is sorted into X and Y carrier cells. In this case, as patients undergo an IVF cycle, mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries to be fertilised in the laboratory with the sorted sperm sample.

The price of MicroSort with IVF in Cyprus is 4200 euros.

MicroSort with IVF and PGD

MicroSort with IVF / PGD is the treatment option we recommend for patients in the older age brackets. The ageing oocyte can experience problems including mitochondrial dysfunction, aneuploidy and epigenetic changes. To ensure that your embryos do not suffer from chromosomal aneuploidy (abnormality), it is recommended that patients over the age of 30 undergo PGD screening.

Success of IVF with sex selection in Cyprus

Success is highly dependent on the patient’s age, ovarian function and the analysis of the male partner’s sperm. The higher the age, the lower the success of any form of fertility treatment.
